Leave a Legacy
By leaving a gift in your Will to SDCAS, you can help asylum seekers and refugees get practical support, advice, education and healthcare
Planning to support the people and causes you care about after your death could be one of the most important things you ever do. None of us choose where or when we’re born or how long we will live, but we can choose to leave something behind to help make the world a better place. Of course, we all want to take care of our loved ones. But once that’s done, we hope you will consider leaving a gift in your Will to support the work of SDCAS.
A gift in your Will, of any size, will mean that we can continue to transform lives. Your donation could help our customers build a new life. The advice, education and skills support that we offer can open the door to opportunity; the opportunity to live a fulfilled, rewarding and supportive life. And the short-term practical support we offer helps asylum seekers and refugees manage their new lives with dignity while they deal with their legal challenges and recover from trauma.
Tax Relief on Legacies
In addition to the Gift Aid support for donations made during our lives, gifts left to charities like SDCAS in the form of a legacy also benefit from tax relief. In fact, charitable legacies are completely exempt from inheritance tax (IHT). Under certain circumstances, if you leave 10% or more of the value of your taxable estate to charity, your other beneficiaries could also benefit.
If you decide to include a gift to SDCAS in your Will, you don’t have to tell us, but it would be wonderful if you did so we could say thank you.
How to leave a Legacy to SDCAS
If you do not have a Will already
Whatever your age or circumstances, it is very important to have a Will. Dying without a Will can create a huge legal burden for your family at a time when they are already grieving. Making a Will can ensure that your loved ones are provided for, with minimum legal admin, and it gives you an opportunity to make a real difference to a cause you feel passionately about.
Because a Will is a legal document, it must comply with some legal formalities. However, depending on your circumstances, it can be very quick and easy. All these options are possible:
You could talk to your solicitor about adding a codicil to include a gift to SDCAS, or write your own. A codicil is a straightforward document that lets you make amendments to an existing Will instead of completely re-writing it. It needs to be signed and witnessed in the same way as a Will, but the witnesses (who must not benefit from your Will) don’t have to be the same people as the people who signed your original Will. The Codicil should then be kept with the original Will, and copies should be given to anyone who is holding a copy of the Will.
You can see an example of a codicil here.
