You are warmly invited to a special event on Saturday 7th May for an afternoon of speakers, documentaries, photo presentations and interactive sessions to find out more about the reality of life as a refugee. Southwark Day Centre for Asylum Seekers is getting together with a number of other Southwark organisations to organise "Refugee Crisis: Behing the Headlines". We'll be looking at the current global situation for migrants and asking what we can do to help on a local level.

Guest speakers will include:
  • Maurice Wren, Chief Executive of the Refugee Council
  • Laura Dubinsky, Immigration Solicitor, Lawyers' Refugee Initiative
  • A representative from Syrian Solidarity UK
  • Isabelle Merminod and Tim Baster, Photojournalists

Come along to the Copeland Gallery, 133 Copeland Road, Peckham, London SE15 3SN (1-6 pm, Admission: £3 waged, free unwaged). For further details and to register go to the event website. Follow the Refugee Response pages on Twitter (@sthwarkrefugees) or Facebook for updates.

Please come along to our regular monthly Saturday bookstall at the Copleston Centre!

There's a good selection of secondhand books on sale, as well as CDs and DVDs, not to mention coffee and cakes to eat in or take away. And all proceeds go to help the work in our day centres.

We're very grateful to our friend Ruth for organising this and also to everyone who has helped so far by staffing the stall and bringing in books, etc to sell. Please bring along any donations you have to one of the sessions or if you would like to help in any other way then contact Ruth on 020 7732 3162.

Next sessions are scheduled for Saturday 16th April and 14th May. We'll be open between 10.30 and 12.30.

Future dates will be publicised via our Facebook and Twitter accounts.

Here, Now: our photography exhibition is open at the Horniman Museum until 6th June

"Here Now" is a photography exhibition delivered by Southwark Day Centre in collaboration with the photographer Nana Varveropoulou and it's being hosted by our friends at the Horniman Museum until 6th June.

At a time when we are presented with one dominant narrative about refugees, this project tells another side of the story. Over four months, Nana worked alongside ten of our clients, all of them newly arrived migrants in the local area, to produce a series of portraits.

Throughout the project, individuals took an active role in how they were represented. Thinking about places that, in some way, are associated with their lives in London, each individual decided where and how they would be photographed as well as providing the text that accompanies their portrait.

The resulting work offers a glimpse into life for new arrivals, their challenges, the ups and downs and the experiences we all share as Londoners.

Admission is free.
